We have compiled a series of tips to help you keep your reloading area clean and safe. This list contains some of the more obvious rules that will help you in developing a safe work environment. You will be dealing with highly flammable and explosive materials. Primers and powders should be used and stored according to manufacturers' instructions. Maintaining or keeping your worksite clean and orderly, and using our most up-to-date reloading guide will ensure your reloads meet your needs.
GUIDELINES FOR RUNNING A SAFE RELOADER'S BENCH
- Reload ammunition only when you can give it your full and undivided attention. Do not reload when under the influence of alcohol, drugs or when tired. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by conversation with others or by television.
- Locate your reloading bench and components away from sources of heat, sparks, open flame and sunlight. Do not smoke while reloading. Always wear safety glasses.
- Keep your reloading area clean. Clean up any spills immediately. Have only the components that you are using at that time on the bench.
- Store all reloading components (powder, primers and bullets) in their original container so they can be properly identified for future use. Never use components that are not in the original container and properly labeled.
- Know your reloading equipment. Do not attempt to load ammunition until you are familiar with how your equipment operates. Contact the equipment or component manufacturer for advice or an operator's manual.
- Be sure that you understand your reloading manual and have the correct components. If there is any doubt, STOP! Do not attempt to reload until you are absolutely certain of what you are doing. Check with the component manufacturer if you need assistance. Never make assumptions.
- Do not reload without an accurate powder scale. When using a progressive reloading press or one with powder bushings, always verify the powder weight with a scale.
- Keep all reloading components out of the reach of children.
- Always follow the recommendations of your reloading manual. Start with minimum loads and do not experiment.
- Properly package and label all reloads. Maintain a reloading data log book for future reference.
